GHOST: To capture a speed blur or motion blur this early at Margaret River's Mainbreak required an early start; Mainbreak is a challenging paddle with all the strong currents, let alone a solo swim in the dark. It's incredible how all your sensors are heightened, hearing every little splash and sound as you swim into the lineup.
I remember at one stage looking at the glow behind the carpark to get a gauge exactly where I was out to sea; I had drifted halfway between Surfers Point and the Box, the middle of the bay, not the most comfortable spot. This was my third attempt to take the image I pictured in my head; the rest were okay but not something I would like to showcase on a grand scale. The wave was not playing the game, or I was a tick-off with my camera settings; it's a fine line when shooting with a slow shutter.
Being a large or medium format camera, it shoots slowly, I don't spray and hope, and it's very calculated when to press the trigger, much like when I started with film, always being very selective on not wasting a shot. One of my favourite empty wave images of Surfers Point; It has great colour and shape captured during 'blue hour" ( that moment just before sunrise or after sunset when the sun dips below the horizon. This whimsical window of time is when a soft blue light fills the sky, creating a cool, peaceful setting that is every bit as beautiful as the golden hour. )
